Interview with Michael Ferro - What Business Owners are Really Looking For

"The main thing is appearance and cleanliness. They also have to be drug and alcohol free."

Michael Ferro, owner of Gino and Joe’s Pizzeria in Buffalo, New York says that first appearance is everything when you walk into a business and apply for a job. Be professional, be ambitious and take the interview seriously.

What do you look for in an applicant?

“The main thing is appearance and cleanliness. They also have to be drug and alcohol free. I look at the person more than the application. I’m usually a pretty good judge of character. I ask about experience, how long they’ve held their old jobs and what was their reason for leaving.”

What mistakes do people make that cause you not to hire them?

“If they came in high or drunk or if they are wearing dirty clothes or have dirty hair. Basically anyone that is the opposite of what I’m looking for.”

How do people stand out?

“Be smart and have good experience. If a guy or girl is ambitious that’s a plus. I try to give everyone a shot if they seem like a good person. Sometimes I’ll hire more people than I need and see who shows up, who works hard, who is willing to get a haircut or whatever I ask them. Sometimes that’s the only way.”

What is a good question for an applicant to ask?

“My favorite question is will they have a future working for me. I like to see someone who is ambitious and wants to advance. If a guy or girl wants to learn and make more of themselves, I really like that.”

Usually, when you walk into a business and apply for a job, you will have to fill out a job application. You will also need to give the person interviewing you a copy of your resume. If you don’t have resume, create a free resume now.
